This is possibly the most talked about book this year, so I’m thrilled to be part of Bloomsbury’s blog tour for the first in a seven book series from debut author Samantha Shannon, The Bone Season! Today, the lovely Samantha has kindly answered a few of my questions, so read on below for the short and sweet interview.
Interview with Samantha Shannon
On Genres and Other Fictional Worlds
Your book hits a lot of genres, and I’ve seen it described as Adult, Young Adult, Fantasy, Dystopia, Urban Fantasy, Sci-Fi… How would you classify The Bone Season?
It’s all of those and none of those. I think putting books into ‘boxes’ is restrictive and discourages experimentation in fiction. In terms of genre, I tried not to assign it one — I just wrote the story I wanted to write. As for audience, it’s officially published by Bloomsbury’s Adult division, but I hope YA readers will enjoy it, too. The content will become more adult as the series goes on, so I definitely wouldn’t recommend it for kids.
Without giving too much away, what can readers expect from your book?
Something familiar yet different, I hope. They can also expect a big, complex parallel world — I’ve put a lot of effort into making Paige’s universe as believable as possible.
How did you celebrate when you found out about your book deal for The Bone Season?
I didn’t actually do that much — none of my friends were around when I found out! I just called my family and told them and my mum and I screamed for a while.
If you could write a story in any other book’s world, what would it be and why?
Daughter of Smoke and Bone. I absolutely loved the chimaera. Mainly the wonderful Brimstone. I have a little obsession with him.
If you weren’t an author, what do you think you would be instead?
I would have had to work with books whatever I did. Maybe an agent or an editor.
Now a few quickfire questions to end:
Tea or coffee?
Drama or comedy?
e-Books or physical books?
Indoors or outdoors?
Raised by Swans
12 Angry Men
Favourite ice cream?
Ben & Jerry’s Baked Alaska
Big thanks to Samantha for taking the time to answer my questions!
