On writing Kaz Brekker

by Leigh Bardugo

When I set out to write Six of Crows, I really wasn’t interested in writing about a “merry band of thieves,” and Kaz makes it clear he’s not some character out of a bedtime story who takes from the rich to give to the poor. He isn’t charming. He isn’t smooth. He’s just the toughest, most ruthless kid in the room, and I have to admit, I love writing him.

Six Reasons Why I love Kaz Brekker

Kaz has survived and thrived against the odds:

“A boy whose only cause was himself. Still he was a survivor, and his own form of soldier.”

Kaz went on to become someone to fear in the Dregs:

“I’m the kind of bastard they only manufacture in the Barrel.”

“The boy they called dirty hands didn’t need a reason any more than he needed permission – to break a leg, sever an alliance, or change a man’s fortunes with the turn of a card.”

So he’d found himself a Fabricator and had his cane made. It became a declaration. There was no part of him that was not broken, that had not healed wrong, and there was no part of him that was not stronger for having been broken. The cane became part of the myth he built.

Kaz owns who and what he is:

“I’m a business man” he’d told her. “no more, no less.”
“You’re a thief, Kaz.”
“Isn’t that what I just said?”

“I’m not some character out of a children’s story who plays harmless pranks and steals from the rich to give to the poor. There was money to be made and information to be had.”

Kaz is commands respect and confidence:

“Being angry at Kaz for being ruthless is like being angry at a stove for being hot. You know what he is.”

“Sure of yourself, aren’t you Brekker?
“Myself and nothing else.”

Kaz is a realist:

“If it were a trick, I’d promise you safety. I’d offer you happiness. I don’t know if that exists in the Barrel, but you’ll find none of it with me.”

“Pretty sure most of us don’t have ‘stalwart’ or ‘true’ checked off on our resumes.”

Kaz doesn’t show he cares often, but when he does…:

“Kaz felt himself drawn toward her voice like water rolling downhill.”

“He was afraid for you.”
“Kat isn’t afraid of anything.”
“You should have seen his face when he brought you to me.”
“I’m a very valuable investment.”

About Crooked Kingdom

Crooked Kingdom by Leigh Bardugo

Game of Thrones meets Ocean’s Eleven: science and superstition collide in the epic sequel to the #1 New York Times bestselling SIX OF CROWS by the highly acclaimed Leigh Bardugo: enter CROOKED KINGDOM.

You met six dangerous outcasts, and watched as they took on one impossible heist in Six of Crows…

A convict with a thirst for revenge.
A sharpshooter who can’t walk away from a wager.
A runaway with a privileged past.
A spy known as the Wraith.
A Heartrender using her magic to survive the slums.
A thief with a gift for unlikely escapes

Now follow as they attempt to survive their success and make their way in Ketterdam’s new world order.

After pulling off a seemingly impossible heist in the notorious Ice Court, criminal prodigy Kaz Brekker feels unstoppable. But life is about to take a dangerous turn – and with friends who are among the deadliest outcasts in Ketterdam city, Kaz is going to need more than luck to survive in this unforgiving underworld.

Kaz Brekker and his crew have just pulled off a heist in the notorious Ice Court so daring even they didn’t think they’d survive. But instead of divvying up a fat reward, they’re right back to fighting for their lives.

Double-crossed and left crippled by a kidnapping, the crew is low on resources, allies, and hope.

Powerful forces from around the world descend on Ketterdam to root out the secrets of the dangerous drug known as jurda parem, old rivals and new enemies emerge to challenge Kaz’s cunning and test the team’s fragile loyalties.

A war will be waged on the city’s dark and twisting streets―a battle for revenge and redemption that will decide the fate of the Grisha world.

You picked the perfect lines & scenes to show Kaz’s personality. I’d be lying if I said I didn’t love him so I won’t even bother. I’ll just say that he’s most likely THE most complex character I have ever come across and I think Leigh did a fabulous job writing him (along with the other Dregs, of course!).

  2. Cardaisha Johnson says:

Kaz was the first character in this book I truly rooted for the longer I read, and can’t wait to see him again.

  3. Kami says:

Can’t wait for Crooked Kingdom! One day!

These quotes though! I love Kaz. He’s definitely one of my favorite characters in this series and I am so excited (and terrified) to read Crooked Kingdom! I really just need Kaz to be happy. Please, Bardugo! haha the waiting is the worst!

  6. Justine says:

Kaz 😍😍😍 I cannot wait for more Kaz, Inej & Nina!

  7. Amazing character profile!
    Great quotes from SOC!

I love how Leigh Bardugo says her character is not charming or smooth….but there’s just SOMETHING about him. That damaged, bad boy that just gets me!

  8. GabyN says:

Kaz!! My favorite!! I love him so much!! Such a complex character, there’s so much to him and I just love that about him. Dying to know what’s gonna happen next, not long now!

  11. Tessa says:

Kaz has to be my favorite deeply flawed characters of all time. He’s so unapologetically ruthless most of the time that when he shows his emotions it hits you that much harder.

  12. Fatma S says:

yeeesss Kaz. Is it bad that I love how ruthless he is? I love how Kaz is so cutthroat sometimes and yet he’s so vulnerable when it comes to Inej. It makes me want to squeal. Can’t wait to see how everything unfolds in Crooked Kingdom AAAHHH!

  13. Dona says:

It was love at first sight. Kaz Brekker had me hooked from the first chapter. His character is and will always be my all-time favourite. He is no. 1 on my fictional crush list. I love him, I admire him, I’m kinda scared of him, it’s a beautiful combination. His feelings for Inej, his vulnerability, just everything man. The very first moment when we are introduced to Kaz, I knew that Leigh had done it again. I knew from that moment that there was no turning back, that my soul belonged to Kaz and Leigh Bardugo. I’d trust Leigh with my life in any and every version of reality.

  14. Brenda says:

Kaz and Inej, can’t wait to read more about these two. Usually two steps ahead of his enemies, ruthless, but still has that soft spot. Can’t wait til tomorrow and Crooked Kingdom.

  15. Theresa says:

Kaz and Inej are perfect 😀 Crooked Kingdom, I’m ready!!

  16. Car says:

KAZ KAZ KAZ ONE DAY ONE DAY ONE DAY. Kaz really grew on me. His backstory was shattering and honestly I just adore that Kanej window scene. Maybe we’ll see more of Jordie in crooked kingdom??

  17. Leah Hanson says:

I love when Kaz’s dry sense of humor comes through. He’s just as quick with his words as he is with his cane. And he always leaves you thinking he’s got just one more trick up his sleeve. Can’t wait for Crooked Kingdom!!

  18. Ysabel Grace says:

KAZZZZ!!!! OMG KAZ IS SUCH A GREAT CHARACTER!!! I can’t wait to see what he does with that decieving old man!! And of course…*in Nina and Jesper’s teasing voice* Ineeeeejjjjjj…..
I wonder how he’d act with his ‘nicer’ and ‘compassionate’ side. :)))) THIS GUY is just such fun reading about. he gives me THE CHILLS!! Which I only had with Adelina’s (from Marie Lu’s Young Elites) creepy voices in her head. lol. BTW, Marie Lu and Leigh are such good friends, I wish I was an author like them just so I could hang out with them.. :'(

  19. Katie says:

Oh sweet, deplorable Kaz. You are my spirit animal. Tomorrows the day!! OMG!!!

  20. Danielle D. says:

I’m so excited for Crooked Kingdom! I can’t wait to see what happens to Kaz and everyone else next!

  21. Sarah says:

Kaz may be ruthless, and we’ve certainly seen sides of him that appear uncaring or callous. But he seems to struggle between being that person who can survive in The Barrel who has no ties and that boy who is incredibly loyal to Inej, Jesper, Nina, and the others. It’s the loyalty, not the ruthlessness, that make us love him.

  22. *Screaming to be heard all the way from Philippines to Ketterdam* Next to Inej, Kaz is my favorite person in the whole Grishaverse. He’s the best male MC I’ve read so far. I love him. Where is Crooked Kingdom. I need my fix of the crew. <3

  23. Less than 24 hours and CK is ours!

  24. Vivien says:

Kaz is just brilliant!! He is so very much like me. An utter joy watching his character develop. So excited for tomorrow!!

  25. Megan says:

Ahh! These are great, can’t wait to read it ❤️

  26. Marcela Zambrana says:

omg Kaz is life I love him

  27. Jocelyne T says:

Who else can successfully pull off a heist like the one in SoC except for Kaz? Most of the things that are done/needed to be done in SoC and Crooked Kingdom can only be done with intelligence and ruthlessness. Kaz helps make the story more realistic.

  28. Grace Federici says:

I’ve missed Kaz. Reunion so close I can barely handle it!!!

  29. Ella says:

I love Kaz so much! He’s such a complicated character, and his backstory is beyond tragic. Can’t wait to see him again in ck!!

  30. Bruinbr says:

Love, love, love Kaz!! Is it tomorrow yet!?!? Can’t wait to get crooked kingdom!

  31. Wendy says:

So happy that my local used paperbacks store not only pre-ordered this for me, but called me to day to let me know it was in! Kaz in all his ruthless glory, but you just KNOW he cares more than he even knows. His cruelty is kindness; his kindness is terrifying.

  32. Penny Olson says:

Having not yet read the Grisha books, I am in the wonderful position of being able to binge read them without waiting for any of them. Thanks for the giveaway!

  33. Alexis says:

My precious Kaz. Kaz is everything a thief should be. He’s cold, particle, and ruthless. I think that’s why I loved Kaz so much. And although I love Kaz the way he is, some of the best moments we have is when he shows that vulnerable side.

  34. Anne Consolacion says:

Haven’t read Six of Crows yet but I’m getting to know all the characters, thanks to this blog tour. Kaz, I believe, is the charismatic bad boy in the bunch. Can’t wait to read about him and all the others in this series!

  35. Jessie Milburn says:

Kaz is the most intricate character in the books! I love characters who live in a mortally grey area! I really hope he ends up with Inej! Can’t wait to read the new book today!

  36. Natalia says:

Aww this making me cry. Kaz deserves everything. So happy he came into my life, a disabled protag too :’)

  37. Sarah Parks says:

I love how Kaz overcame so much adversity in his childhood and now, even though he is still so young, is one of the most feared bosses in the dregs. I can’t wait to learn more about Kaz’s backstory! <3

  38. Jhanna says:

Kaz is such a beautifully complex character, with so much character development potential that we’ve already seen parts of. Can’t wait to see how his story ends.

  39. Kayla! says:

I LOVED THE FIRST BOOK SO MUCH!
Of all of the books I read last year this was my favorite and it is the only one that left me with a CONSISTENT pining throughout the long year.
And KAZ is a major reason why!
So dark and hard and went through so much. You can see how it has damaged him (more emotionally versus physically) and I cant wait to read the next book! (Currently in my hands!)

Btw. The audiobook of Six of Crows was also FANTASTIC they had multiple voices for the characters and it was LOVELY!

  40. Kaitlyn says:

Ugh I fell for the first book after the first five pages and that almost NEVER happens; it was so good. I read Six of Crows extremely fast, and then went and got myself my own copy just so I could hug it when I felt like it. I can’t believe Crooked Kingdom is finally out!

  41. Kaz is so snarky and I love it. To be honest there has never been such a perfect cast of characters in a book…. EVER. Every single one of them and the things they bring to the table is amazing. I just went to Target to get CK and I have to finish my reread of Six of Crows but I guarantee that I am going to be staying up way past my bedtime. Also great job picking these lines for Kaz. They really illustrate who he is!

  42. Angel says:

Kaz is such a complex character and it was interesting to see all the sides described above of him in Six of Crows and I’m quite excited to read more of him in Crooked Kingdom!

  43. Stephanie says:

I can’t wait to read this. I just got my (first) copy in the mail today Thanks for the post!

  44. Kat T. says:

Kaz is my favorite character in the series. He’s just so memorable and interesting and smart. I like how he’s always calculating his next move. I hope they make this book series into a movie someday.

  45. Fay says:

    The character card looks awesome!

  46. Grace Radford-Tingley says:

I have to disagree with Leigh when she says he’s not smooth, unless you’re talking about romance, then yeah, he’s totally not smooth at all. At everything else I would say he’s pretty darn smooth though. haha.

  47. Joanna R. says:

I can’t wait to see what happens in Crooked Kingdom! Inej is my favorite!

  48. Annilee says:

Kaz is one of the most intriguing heroes, or I should say antiheroes, that I’ve ever read about. I love reading about him, from his backstory to his relationship with Inej.

  49. Alex U. says:

Kaz is such a fascinating character! I can’t wait to learn more about him in Crooked Kingdom!

  50. margaret g says:

I love Kaz’s character – I can’t to learn more about his background!

  51. Hannah Hinton says:

I love this series so much they are beautiful books!

  52. Natalie Monroe says:

I’m not surprised Kaz is the last stop. He’s a huge fan favorite—and mine. 😉 Thanks for running this giveaway!

  53. Meigan says:

i’ve definitely read books where the ruthless guys, the real cut-throat girls, will fall wayward as the story progresses. but kaz is written so true-to-character it hurts. i love it. make me tremble in my boots. -meigan

  54. Tracy says:

I love kaz so much it hurts, when I read about his back story in bin six of crows and crooked kingdom I can’t help the agony that I feel for him. I hold such respect for him and admire the wonderful way his brain thinks which is probably not something I should say because of the way he does things with such ruthlessness but I love him nonetheless and that’s why seeing the glimpses of decency and good in him, really hit me hard and mean so much to me.

  55. Kaz is so amazing and badass! I love how multi-dimensional he is, and I can’t wait to read more of him in CK!

  56. Sananda Davalillo says:

My beloved Kaz! What can I say, he’s my favorite, in the top of the list with Inej. I like his character so much! <3

  57. Carina Olsen says:

Lovely tour post sweetie 😀 Gosh, I love Kaz. <3 He is simply the bestest. I love how he is full of secrets. And how his past is so broken. Yet he isn't fully broken yet, I don't think. Can't wait to read more about him in Crooked Kingdom 🙂

  58. Hannah R says:

Kaz is such a complex, brilliant character and the moments when he shows he cares, even when he simultaneously denies it, are so great. One of my favorite/most memorable lines in SoC is in his last POV chapter: “I’m going to get my money, Kaz vowed. And I’m going to get my girl.”

  59. Alice Moraes says:

Kaz is just my favorite creepy, too smart for his own good, criminal demjin baby S2
