I’m thrilled to be hosting the lovely Stephanie Garber, in celebration of her much anticipated debut novel, Caraval! Stephanie is an absolute joy and her book about sisters, magic and the circus is one that so many have been looking forward to for so long.
Buying Dreams in a Bottle
by Stephanie Garber
A couple years ago I bought a bottle of dreams at a street fair.
I was only working part time, so that I could dedicate the rest of my time to writing, which meant I was on a very tight budget. The last thing I had money for was a bottle of dreams. There didn’t appear to be a practical use for it, and yet this bottle was probably more important item I could have purchased that day.
How often do you find a bottle of dreams? Or anything that makes you wonder if it’s possible to put dreams in a bottle? When I was a child I used to wonder all the time. I would build leprechaun traps on St. Patrick’s day, wish on the first star I saw at night, inspect my room every time I returned to see if any of my dolls had moved, because I was never quite sure they didn’t come alive when I left.
Then I grew up and spent more time worrying than wondering. What am I going to do with my life? Who am I going to marry? Where am I going to live? I began to forgot how to wonder. And then I started writing again.
One of the first lines I wrote for Caraval was, “Welcome, welcome to Caraval where you can buy dreams in a bottle and sip magic from a cup.” I wrote this before I even know what the story was about. I only knew I wanted to create a world full of wonder and enchantment, where everyone gets one impossible wish, and bottles labeled dreams really do contain dreams.
I believe wonder is its own type of magic. As you read, I hope you are swept into a world full of wonder that stays with you long after you read the last page. I hope you find enchanted potions, wander streets that lead to ever-changing destinations, win tickets to magical worlds and beyonds.
Welcome to Caraval, where nothing is quite what it seems.
Scarlett has never left the tiny isle of Trisda, pining from afar for the wonder of Caraval, a once-a-year week-long performance where the audience participates in the show.
Caraval is Magic. Mystery. Adventure. And for Scarlett and her beloved sister Tella it represents freedom and an escape from their ruthless, abusive father.
When the sisters’ long-awaited invitations to Caraval finally arrive, it seems their dreams have come true. But no sooner have they arrived than Tella vanishes, kidnapped by the show’s mastermind organiser, Legend.
Scarlett has been told that everything that happens during Caraval is only an elaborate performance. But nonetheless she quickly becomes enmeshed in a dangerous game of love, magic and heartbreak. And real or not, she must find Tella before the game is over, and her sister disappears forever.
