Teaser Tuesday (29): Prophecy by Ellen Oh

reviewer: Daphne     December 18th, 2012     Fantasy, Teaser Tuesday, Young Adult

Teaser Tuesday is a weekly bookish meme, hosted by MizB of Should Be Reading. Anyone can play along! Just do the following:

  1. Grab your current read
  2. Open to a random page
  3. Share two (2) “teaser” sentences from somewhere on that page, being careful not to INCLUDE SPOILERS!
  4. Share the title & author, too, so that other TT participants can add the book to their TBR Lists if they like your teasers!

My teaser this week is:

prophecy

The temple was built into the moutain. But as the world around the temple changed, the monks began to fear for their simple way of life. Legend has it that the mountains grew around the temple to keep them safe.

I was very excited about this book, and am grateful to Ashley from Booknook for lending me her copy. Being Asian myself, I appreciate the surge of Asia-inspired fantasy on the market recently, as it reminds me of my anime-watching, manga-reading teenage years. I’ll go into more detail about the book in my review, but I like the world Oh has built (and it has a map! I’m a sucker for maps) and it’s lovely to learn more about ancient Korea.

Teaser Tuesday (28): The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

My teaser this week is:

The Darkest Minds by Alexandra Bracken

I flipped the sheet over, looking for any actual news. I skimmed over an opinion piece that celebrated the rehabilitation camps and was more amused than offended that Psi kids were now being openly referred to as “mutant time bombs”.

I am lucky enough to know Alex in real life and was more than a little excited that she managed to snag and sign a galley from BEA to send to me across the pond. Once I started this book, I really couldn’t put it down. It’s an amazing world and cast of characters that she’s built and I have to admit I almost wish I haven’t read the book early, because I have even longer to wait for the sequel. A must read as soon as you get a chance, only two weeks to go!

My teaser this week is:

The Raven Boys by Maggie Stiefvater

He was so real. When it finally happened, when she finally saw him, it didn’t feel like magic at all. It felt like looking into the grave and seeing it look back at her.

“Is that all?” she whispered.

Gansey closed his eyes. “That’s all there is.”

It’s getting tougher and tougher to pick just one teaser out of my current reads lately, because I’m on a good run, but I thought this little snippet was an appropriate taste of this fantastic book. It shows off the beautiful writing and also sets the haunting mood wonderfully. Gansey and Blue are two characters that interweave throughout the novel and this highlights their first meeting…or does it? So much love for this book already, just one more week to go!

My teaser this week is:

Defiance by CJ Redwine

I look around for a scarf or some other piece of cloth to cover her up, but all I have is a scrap of a kitchen towel, and I already know she’ll never agree to it.

Which settles it. I’ll have to stand in front of her the entire time.

The deep blue of her dress brings out the blue in her eyes, and the diamonds sewn into the bodice sparkle in the light.

Which draws the eye straight to her breasts.

She’s wearing the dish towel. I don’t care what she says.

I had so much trouble picking just one teaser as I could live in Logan’s mind forever. This is one of my favourite exchanges where he shows his charming ineptness with women, coupled with his conservative sensibilies and is one of the many attributes that makes him so lovable. The whole chapter really just made me smile from ear to ear and I’m thankful for this new trend in YA books where the narrator alternates between the male and female protagonist, because without it this wouldn’t exist. Thank you, C.J., for creating such an amazing guy and look out for more of my “I love Logan” declarations as the Defiance Blog Tour stops by on the 17th of September!
