The ruthless and brilliant brother Vishous possesses a destructive curse and a frightening ability to see the future. As a member of the Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain and taste true pleasure for the first time-until a destiny he didn’t choose takes him into a future that does not include her…

Another fantastic installment to the Black Dagger Brotherhood series.

This one is Vishous’ book. After being told the horrifying news that he has to become the ‘Primale’ of the vampire race (i.e. he is required to mate with the chosen females to ensure the survival of the warrior race) Vishous goes out to take his anger out in a hunt for lessers. Unfortunately, he takes a bullet to the chest and ends up on the operating table of Jane Whitcomb in a human hospital! From thereon the story gets better and better as V’s brother’s bust him out of the hospital before the sun can come up and before the staff notice his weird anatomy! Only problem is, V insists on bringing Jane home with him..!

I LOVED the storyline between V and Jane…it was developed so naturally throughout the book…and certainly wasn’t love at first sight! Jane is one of the stronger female roles of this series and it really was nice to see her take control of the relationship.

My teaser this week is:

Lover Unbound by J R Ward

“Now he was glowing all over; he didn’t even have to look down at his forearms to know that what was within his hand had spread throughout him. Just. Like. Her. “God… damn you.” “My son..” He bared his fangs, “You do not call me that. Ever. Mother and son… we arn’t that. My mother would have done something. When I couldn’t help myself, my mother would have been there….”

Lover Unbound (Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 5)
by J R Ward

Ok, I know that’s a few more than a couple sentences but its so hard to pick just small snippets from these awsome books!

So I’ve returned to the world of the Black Dagger Brotherhood with the book of Vishous (my favourite brother!) I’ve been looking forward to reading more about him as he is a really interesting character and there always seemed to be something a little ‘off’ about him. Well I was right, a major plot twist just happened and I’m loving that I totally didn’t see it coming! This series never fails to amaze me and I’m really enjoying making my way through them!

Angel Fire by L A Weatherly

Angel Fire by L A Weatherly

Author: L A Weatherly
Series: Angel Trilogy, Book 2
Publisher: Usborne Publishing
Published: October 2011
709 pages

Only Willow has the power to defeat the malevolent Church of Angels, and they will stop at nothing to destroy her. Willow isn’t alone, though. She has Alex by her side – a trained Angel Killer and her one true love. But nothing can change the fact that Willow’s a half-angel, and when Alex joins forces with a group of AKs, she’s treated with mistrust and suspicion. She’s never felt more alone…until she meets Seb. He’s been searching for Willow his whole life – because Seb is a half-angel too..

This is the sequel to Angel (or Angel Burn in the US). I absolutely loved Angel. I thought it was original and unique and exciting and just… really really good. Angel Fire however in comparison (to me at least) fell flat. Yes there were aspects that were good but I spent more time complaining about it than loving it so I’m quite disappointed.

So let’s start with what I liked. The actual storyline of Willow, Alex and the AK’s plotting against the angels and the action that goes along with that was good. Much like in the first book, the action in this book is very well played out, keeps you interested and has you on the edge of your seat. I also really liked the relationship between Willow and Alex (for the first third of the book). It was playful, funny and just… nice. Even though all this stuff was going off around them, they could forget about it when they were together.

And now for what I didn’t like. Firstly, the love triangle. I’m sorry but there was no need to introduce a love triangle just because this is a sequel. There is no rule that says every YA fantasy book HAS to have a love triangle in the sequel. The story would have worked fine without it. There was enough conflict and issues without throwing in Seb, the gorgeous Mexican half angel/ long lost soul mate of Willow. End of rant.

Secondly, (ok the rant may start up again here because this also relates to Seb) I did not like the storyline of the book from the point where Seb finds Willow. This may sound like an unfair reason to not like a book but if the storyline is going in a direction I really REALLY don’t like then I don’t feel happy reading it and for about two thirds of this book I felt anxious and mad and just, not happy with the way things were playing out.

Thirdly, due to the Seb storyline, something changed in Alex and Willow. It was like they became different characters to who they were in the first book. They acted differently and irrationally and just stupidly if I’m being honest. Some of it felt really out of character and I was sad about this because as I said above, I loved Alex and Willow in the first section of the book and in Angel.

Lastly, this book is over 700 pages long. Now I’ve got nothing against long books… if it works for the story. In this case, I’m afraid it just doesn’t. This book was way too long for what actually happened in the story and I think at least 200 pages could have been cut out of the middle and the story would have been all the better for it.

So in the end the thing that saved Angel Fire from a lower rating was the ending. The ending was actually quite perfect. More action and adventure and very epic scenes that kept me reading until quite late, along with some resolution to that tiresome love triangle. And it’s because of the ending that I will read the final book when it comes out in October, Angel Fever.

If you’ve read Angel then I guess you will be picking this up anyway but I just wouldn’t expect the same awesomeness as Angel

Lover Revealed by J R Ward

Lover Revealed by J R Ward

Author: J R Ward
Series: Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 4
Publisher: Piatkus books
Published: February 2011
480 pages

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly turf war raging between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret bound of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. Possessed by a deadly beast Rhage is the most dangerous of the Black Dagger Brotherhood.

Butch O’Neal is a fighter by nature. A hard living, ex-homicide cop, he’s the only human ever to be allowed in the inner circle of the Black Dagger Brotherhood. And he wants to go even deeper into the vampire world- to engage in the turf war with the lessers. He’s got nothing to lose. His heart belongs to a female vampire, an aristocratic beauty who’s way out of his league. If he can’t have her, then at least he can fight side by side with the Brothers…

Fate curses him with the very thing he wants. When Butch sacrifices himself to save a civilian vampire from the slayers, he falls prey to the darkest force in the war. Left for dead, found by a miracle, the Brotherhood calls on Marissa to bring him back, though even her love may not be enough to save him…

I’ve been on a bit of a Black Dagger Brotherhood binge lately. Straight after I finished book 3 I started book 4. This one I don’t think is as good as the others, but I still believe that its a good and necessary edition to the series.

This tells the story of Butch and Marrissa, who’s story originally began in the first book. Nothing much happend with them in books 2 and 3 but in book 4 they are brought to the forfront of the storyline. Butch (or Cop as the brothers refer to him) is human. He is the only human (other than Mary) who is let into the inner circle of the brotherhood. And although he was ok with this for a while, eventually he gets sick of feeling like a ‘pet’ and wants to help them in their eradication of the lessers. However when he gets brutally tortured by the lessers for information on the brotherhood, his wish of becomming involved becomes a nightmareish reality and he gets quite a lot more than he bargained for!

This storyline I liked. It was nice to let Butch have his limelight and show his worth. However, what I didn’t really care for was his love interest, Marissa. Her personality was quite annoying and I become exasperated with her. She would go back and forth between loving Butch and being happy to then falling out with him for the smallest reason and walking out. This happened too much and I got bored with it. This is why I have given Lover Revealed 3.5 stars.

I like how these books always plant the seeds for future books. And that is what it felt like the purpose of this book was for.. to plant the beginnings of more storylines to come. I guess you could say this one is a bit of a gap filler. So with that in mind, I think it accomplished this very well. We were given more insight into the mind of Vishous (whose book comes next), with his crazy sex life and his visions of the future and other problems. We got a couple of chapters from Rehvenge’s POV.. And also the story of John Matthews is progressed nicely. Seeing him growing up and learning about the brotherhood and girls and fighting, and also dealing with the tradegy of what happened at the end of book 3, I felt Lover Revealed did a great job of progressing his storyline.

Lastly, I feel I need to point out what my favourite thing about this book was. And that was the ‘bromance’. Yes, the bromance. I’m of course speaking of Butch and Vishious. Their relationship is hillarous, clever, loyal and quite lovely. I want to see more of this in future books!

So as I say, not a bad book, in terms of books in general, Lover Revealed is very good, but in comparison to the first three, to me anyway, I found it quite average.

A former blood slave, the vampire Zsadist still bears the scars from a past filled with suffering and humiliation. Bella is instantly entranced by the seething power Zsadist possesses. But even as their desire for one another begins to overtake them both, Zsadist’s thirst for vengeance against Bella’s tormentors drives him to the brink of madness. Now, Bella must help her lover overcome the wounds of his tortured past, and find a future with her…

WARNING – MINOR SPOILERS FROM BOOK 2

Oh Zsadist… **sigh** I don’t think I’m going to be able to do this book (or Zsadist) justice in this review but I’m going to try!

Firstly, this one is now my new favourite BDB book. Everything that was good about the first two is even more so in Lover Awakened. The action, the romance, the friendships and journies these characters go on. It all made for such an epic story.

What I love the most about this one is the huge journey that Zsadist goes on throughout the book. He has to deal with issues that he has had for over 100 years, which began when he was kidnapped and used as a blood slave by a wealthy aristercrat. Ever since his brother Phury rescued him he has been unable to properly interact with others, unable to love, unable to even touch other people. That is until he meets Bella. She (unlike everyone else) isn’t scared of him and wants to bring him out of his shell. But at the end of book 2 she was kidnapped by a lesser who was completely mad and thought she was his dead wife. Once Zsadist manages to rescue her they begin a wonderful journey towards both his and her recovery and I loved every minute of it. It was written beautifully and so perfect.

As with the other BDB books there are many sub plots being told at the same time as the main storyline and again I loved this. From the bromance of Butch and Vischious to the story of John who is training to become a warrior, and new characters such as Bella’s brother… they all contributed in making this book a very well rounded story.

I just can’t get enough of the brothers at the minute and when I finished this I literally started reading the next one straight away. They are THAT addictive. So, if you havent started this series yet and are a fan of adult paranormal romance then I urge you to give these a try. They are compelling, addictive, gritty, romantic, funny and just all around awesome!
