Top Ten Tuesday is a weekly meme hosted by The Broke and the Bookish to show off our book-related lists!

I know this isn’t the topic you expected this week (sorry I’m a week late), but I can never pass up the opportunity to highlight my top reads of the year so far. So much so that I’ve had to cheat a little and grouped several series in here as one pick. So here you have my top ten fourteen books for 2014 so far (which by the way, just made total sense):

Another woeful performance from my Winter TBR list, where I only managed to read 2 out of 10 books. Here’s hoping that Spring is more productive!

Borrowed

These books were pushed on me by three good friends. After I lent Caitlin Vicious, she bought, read and loved The Archived by Victoria Schwab as well, so I’m really thrilled to get a chance to read it. Splintered is one book that Faye won’t stop going on about, and its sequel Unhinged, which was released recently was also just as good. Finally, Jim has been pushing and pushing this latest from Catnip Publishing, Girl with the White Dog, so much that he’s already convinced quite a few people to buy it and me to cheekily borrow it from him. Thanks guys for the great recs!

There are so many amazing books to be published next year, this list was extremely difficult to narrow down. I’ve tried to include mostly UKYA (that I haven’t had a chance to read yet) with a couple of sequels that I couldn’t NOT add to the list!

Miscellaneous / December 28, 2012

I just couldn’t let this year pass without picking my Top 10 books of 2012! I wanted to recap a fabulous year in book reading and spend one last moment urging everyone to pick up these books. Seriously, they are incredible!

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
10. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo (UK title: The Gathering Dark)
An enchanting tale about a young girl Alina discovering her unique powers. This book brought tsar-punk into our lexicon and has one of the most intriguingly mysterious villains (or is he…?) I’ve read in a long time in The Darkling.

Once upon a time, an angel and a devil fell in love and dared to imagine a new way of living – one without massacres and torn throats and bonfires of the fallen, without revenants or bastard armies or children ripped from their mothers’ arms to take their turn in the killing and dying.

Once, the lovers lay entwined in the moon’s secret temple and dreamed of a world that was a like a jewel-box without a jewel – a paradise waiting for them to find it and fill it with their happiness.

This was not that world.

SPOILER ALERT

One day, I descended into the tube station and heard a beautiful, clear whistling. It came from a busker—a tall blind man, who held his head high, and stood tall even with his walking stick. The sound was a sombre melancholy, but also full of hope. The emotion I felt when I heard it has stayed with me since, and describes exactly how I felt when reading this book. Through all its beautiful writing, Days of Blood and Starlight broke my heart into a million pieces, put it all together, and then broke it again. And I loved it.
