I just couldn’t let this year pass without picking my Top 10 books of 2012! I wanted to recap a fabulous year in book reading and spend one last moment urging everyone to pick up these books. Seriously, they are incredible!

Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo
10. Shadow and Bone by Leigh Bardugo (UK title: The Gathering Dark)
An enchanting tale about a young girl Alina discovering her unique powers. This book brought tsar-punk into our lexicon and has one of the most intriguingly mysterious villains (or is he…?) I’ve read in a long time in The Darkling.

R. H. Ragona’s Circus of Magic is the greatest circus of Ellada. Nestled among the glowing blue Penglass—remnants of a mysterious civilisation long gone—are wonders beyond the wildest imagination. It’s a place where anything seems possible, where if you close your eyes you can believe that the magic and knowledge of the vanished Chimaera is still there. It’s a place where anyone can hide.

Iphigenia Laurus, or Gene, the daughter of a noble family, is uncomfortable in corsets and crinoline, and prefers climbing trees to debutante balls. Micah Grey, a runaway living on the streets, joins the circus as an aerialist’s apprentice and soon becomes the circus’s rising star.

But Gene and Micah have balancing acts of their own to perform, and a secret in their blood that could unlock the mysteries of Ellada.

When the cover was first revealed, my first impression was that it was gorgeous and intriguing. It wasn’t until after I finished the book that I realised how appropriate the cover is. With a finger on the lips, like a modern day Mona Lisa, the cover has a secret. And when you discover the secret within the beautifully crafted Pantomime, boy, is it a good one.
